Citizens UK Meeting in Parliament
Septemer - December 2018
Misogyny or gender hate crime is not currently recognised in UK legislation. In 2018 the Law Commission of England and Wales announced a once-in-a-generation review of all hate crime legislation. In response, Sylvie and another team member, Rosie, joined a working group on hate crime in Parliament led by Stella Creasy MP. The pair spoke to Professor David Ormerod QC and secured agreement that the Law Commission would visit Greater Manchester later in the year.
Law Commission Event
September 2018
On 11th September 2019, our campaign hosted representatives from the Law Commission at the British Muslim Heritage Centre. Over 70 individuals attended, including community groups, Greater Manchester Police, The UK Challenging Hate Forum, the CPS and Elinor Chohan MBE DL. We heard powerful testimony from brave women discussing experiences of misogyny, homophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, disablism, xenophobia, workplace discrimination and anti-sex worker hate. This event provided vital insight for the Law Commission; we look forward to reading their draft proposal to be published in February 2020, and to continue providing opportunities for consultation.
